Seventy rooms in the Stubai valley, Relais & Châteaux, with a Michelin star in the dining room and a spa that is more interesting than its size suggests. The Wilderer sauna heats mineral rock over an open flame and then lowers it into a copper kettle. The Spa Chalet is seven hundred square metres of centuries-old Tyrolean barn wood, with a tea butler and a glacier view.
There is a whirlpool that starts when you take the stairs to it, and a bucket of glacier water above a shower for anyone who wants the shock.
What makes it good value is the card they hand you at check-in from May to November: four cable cars, one ascent and descent a day on each, all the valley buses, the Stubaital railway and the water park. Snowshoes and poles are free. So is the spa from ten in the morning on the day you arrive.
